The journey
Who is Anne ?
Trained in traditional techniques, Anne has developed a unique style where each work — canvas, sculpture or puppet — tells a story.
These stories emerge from the fertile ground of the artist’s memories and encounters. Her characters, human or animal, hold up to us, like a distorting mirror, an amplified, tender or mischievous image of our aspirations, our dreams and our contradictions. In short, they are a big wink at ourselves!
The technique
Sgraffito and beyond
Sgraffito is at the heart of her approach : each work takes shape through successive scratchings, line by line, revealing the white clay beneath the black ink. This patient dialogue with matter gives the characters a singular presence, as if they emerged by themselves from the surface.
Anne also explores watercolour, gouache, gold leaf, clay modelling, sculpture and 3D printing. This diversity of techniques allows her to adapt her gesture to each character, according to what it has to say.
The studio
A lived-in place
Nestled in Quebec’s Outaouais region, Anne Bouillon’s studio is a space where imagination takes shape. Surrounded by her tools, her materials and her characters in the making, she works each piece with the care and attention reserved for what is unique.
